Sportstech SX400 Exercise Bike – Indoor Cycle For Fitness
The Sportstech SX400 provides great value for money and is the perfect stepping stone between a basic spin bike and an advanced indoor bike. If you are looking for a safe and effective machine to practice on, the SX400 is ideal.
The SX400 is certainly an impressive looking bike and looks far more expensive than its sale price. I’m sure you won’t deny it looks the part, and in a way, makes many of the other models in its price range look rather bland. But does the Sportstech bike live up to its looks?
Suitable for most heights, the stride length caters for heights between 1.6 mt and 1.95 mt with stride lengths of between 71 and 76 cm.
You can adjust the height of the saddle on the Sportstech sx400 speed bike by 20 cm, and horizontally by 7 cm, allowing you to find the best workout position. The saddle can even be replaced with another bike saddle should you feel the need to do so.
The handlebars are also adjustable and can be adjusted in height by 15 cm and horizontally by 7 cm.
The training computer on the SX400 indoor bike shows all your information as you work out. It allows you to see your speed, distance, calorie count, cadence, pulse, and also the driving time.
With the ability to connect to a tablet or smartphone through Bluetooth, you’ll be able to take advantage of the most popular training apps. Apps such as the free iBiking app allow you to record your training and plan routes. The Kinomap app is popular for indoor bike users as it allows you to drive with Google street view images through real-life routes.
Please note that these apps will not be able to control the intensity of your workouts as the resistance on the Sportstech SX400 is adjusted by hand.
Your pulse is monitored using the built-in pulse sensors on the bike handlebars, which is often more convenient than wearing an uncoded chest strap. Although there are chest straps that are compatible with the sx400, none are included and will have to be purchased separately.

22 Kg Flywheel
If you are new to indoor biking, you may not be well versed in the importance of a good quality flywheel.
The flywheel is one of the components that separate a good indoor bike from a bad one. The good news is, the Sportstech sx400 comes with a 22kg flywheel, which is extremely effective for high-intensity workouts and will easily put you through the paces.
There are three elements you should pay attention to when shopping for an exercise bike. These three elements will determine how the bike performs and make up the bike’s drive system. The flywheel, the crankset, and the transmission are what make up the drive system.
As you would expect from Sportstech, the sx400 is equipped with good varients of these components and produces a realistic and smooth ride.
The 22kg flywheel is machine balanced to ensure it produces a smooth motion and delivers a consistent 360-degree pedal stroke.
The flywheel system on the sx400 is also bi-directional, which means you can pedal backward with resistance, adding more diversity to your workouts.
As the SX400 indoor spin bike is a fixed gear bike, you will have to wait for the flywheel to stop turning before the pedals stop turning as they move together at the same time.
If you would prefer a drive system that works just like a standard pedal bike where the pedals and wheel work independently, you will need to increase your budget as they typically cost above £1000.
A general rule of thumb when choosing an indoor bike is that the heavier the flywheel, the more resistance you will be able to achieve. Overall the flywheel on the sx400 is more than good enough to provide tough riding sessions in the comfort of your home.
Although this is a mid-range bike from Sportstech, unfortunately, it does not come with magnetic resistance. Not a problem for most but certainly worth mentioning. The Sportstech spin bike uses the shoe system and has various levels of manual resistance adjustment.
The transmission system adds fluidity and helps to keep the machine quiet while you ride.
The step-free, resistance level adjustment allows for great smoothness in the transition between settings and provides an overall quiet experience while cycling. The belt drive system helps you to achieve optimal power transmission. All the features of the flywheel and resistance system assure you that workouts are not only effective, but they are also enjoyable. All in all, we believe the resistance system on the sx400 is top-notch and hard to beat in this price range.
- High-quality belt drivetrain.
- Durable belt-box.
- Fixed-gear driven system.
Spin bikes generally come with either belt drive or chain drive systems. The Sportstech sx400 comes with a poly-v belt system that includes a couple of benefits over a chain drive system. There is less maintenance for you to worry about as you won’t need to keep the poly-v belt lubricated as you would a chain drive system, and you won’t have any issues with locked links either. There is also less vibration which helps to keep the noise of the machine down when pedalling.
Every turn of the belt ring turns the flywheel three times, providing good momentum and pedalling.
I mentioned earlier in this post that the flywheel is one of the most important components that separate a good bike from a bad one. While true, many other factors must be considered and taken into account before making your purchase.
The frame on the sx400 is a bit heavy, and some may see it as a negative, but not us. If you want your bike to feel stable while riding, especially at a higher speed, the heavy frame may be what you need to maintain a higher level of stability.
The Sportstech Sx400 provides users with exceptional stability as both of its bases have adjustable levellers that you can easily adjust to suit the level of your floor. These levellers also come with oversized rubber pads on the bottom of them to protect your floor from scratches while offering extra grip and stability.
The weight of the frame on the SX400 indoor cycle is 65 kg. And when you add the user weight on top of this, you can understand why the sx400 indoor bike offers such good stability.
